Sustainability and preservation of our environment – it’s all our responsibility

At Backpackers Villa we take sustainability seriously and organise our daily lives as environmentally conscious as possible – for our guests, our team and our shared future.

Since 2009 we have been using solar energy to heat our water and in 2017 we added photo voltaic panels to another part of the roof, which now allows us to produce some of our own electricity. In addition, we have installed heat exchangers in all public showers in the public showers, which use hot waste water to preheat fresh water. This also helps us to reduce the carbon footprint of each guest. joulia.com

For many years, we have been offering electric charging stations for both our guests and the local population. We are constantly upgrading our facilities so that you too can fully charge your car at a reasonable speed.

Both buildings have automatic ventilation systems, which not only raise the standard of the rooms but also improve the energy balance.

In this way, we are implementing what our 1997 mission statement sets out: ‘Through our everyday ecological actions, we are committed to preserving creation while putting people at the centre.’

Backpackers Villa operates in a climate-neutral manner

Certificate myclimate
environmental certificate PET

In 2011, Backpackers Villa became the first hostel in Switzerland to be climate neutral. Since then, we have been offsetting the CO2 emissions that we are unable to reduce to zero despite all our efforts with myclimate.org myclimate.org.

Projects at home and abroad are reducing CO2 emissions in real terms and are enabling us to support sustainable development.

In recent years, we have supported various projects:
mobisol provides light where it is needed and was previously not possible – one of many projects by myclimate.org

We are delighted that Wäscheperle Interlaken – our long-standing laundry partner – has been awarded the Thun Social Star for employing people with disabilities. We congratulate them and are delighted to have a partner in Wäscheperle that does good! Thank you very much.

Towels

We have decided to give only one towel for free, for an exchange we charge CHF 5.- per piece. We have tried to explain and educate for a long time. Washing/Laundry has high impact on sustainability and the environment. And the incredible natural environment we enjoy in Interlaken, is the precise reason why all our guests and you are coming to stay. This is one aspect where everyone of us can easily contribute to a more sustainable way of living or travelling. Only with the introduction of a charge have we managed to bring down the number of changes to a sustainable level.

Certificates

Many thanks to everyone who takes the time to write us a review, on whatever platform.
